Overview

This document describes the procedure of configuring Deep Freeze workstation to retain Faronics Insight application data and its configuration using Faronics Data Igloo.

 Introduction

Deep Freeze by its nature reverts all the system configuration and data on the protected system upon every reboot. However, Insight users might require retaining Insight-specific data and configuration while the system remains Frozen. In this case the user may need to use Data Igloo to retain that particular data by redirecting certain folders and registries onto Thawed location, which is not monitored by Deep Freeze. This document describes the steps of configuring the system and particularly data Igloo to retain data for each of the Insight components: Teacher Console, Tech Console and Insight Student. It is assumed, the system already has Faronics Deep Freeze workstation with existing Thawed location and Data Igloo installed.

 Redirecting Insight Teacher Console data

Insight Teacher Console is a user-specific application; therefore it keeps most of its data and configuration settings inside the user profile, particularly in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER Registry key. This will require redirecting the whole user profile, as well as some other folders global for all users as described below:

 1.       Reboot workstation into Thawed state. This will ensure all further described changes will be retained.

2.      Login another admin user, which is different from the one, which requires retaining the Insight Teacher Console data. This is required for Data Igloo to redirect the targeted user, since Data Igloo cannot redirect the same user as it is currently running with.

Note: If there are no any other admin users on the system, a new temporary admin user must be created, so Data Igloo can be launched from it.

3.      Quit Insight Teacher Console, if it is opened. This will ensure that no files or folders will be locked during data relocation.

4.      From the Windows Task Manager stop LskHelper process, if this process is not stopped after closing the Teacher Console in previous step.

5.      Using Data Igloo user redirection feature, redirect the targeted user profile, which will be used for running Insight Teacher Console. This will ensure some user-specific data of Insight Teacher Console will be retained.

6.      Create following new folders, if they do not exist:

On 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight

On 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight

7.      Using data Igloo folder redirection feature, redirect folders mentioned in previous step:

On 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight

On 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight

This will ensure some global data of Insight Teacher Console will be retained

8.     Using Data Igloo Registry redirection feature, redirect the following Registry keys:

On 32-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Insight

On 64-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Insight

This will ensure some global data of Insight Teacher Console will be retained

9.      Reboot the system and login the targeted user.

10.  Open Insight Teacher Console. At this point the Teacher Console should start up as expected.

11.   Add Teacher.exe process into Windows Firewall exception list if the system prompts to do so. Otherwise manually reconfigure Windows Firewall for exempting Insight Teacher Console program using its new location:

On XP systems:

Remove “Insight Teacher” firewall exception. Insight will automatically recreate new firewall exception using new location of Insight Teacher Console program

On Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8:

Open Windows Firewall Advanced Settings snap-in and update “Insight Teacher” Inbound and Outbound rules properties with new location of  Teacher.exe program

This will ensure Insight Teacher Console will communicate with Insight Students

12.  Reboot system into Frozen state.

Now Insight Teacher Console will retain all its data and configuration settings on Frozen system.

Redirecting Insight Tech Console data

Insight Tech Console has a similar design as Insight Teacher Console, but it keeps its data in different folders and registries. The procedure of redirecting Insight Tech Console is as follows:

1.       Reboot workstation into Thawed state. This will ensure all further described changes will be retained.

2.      Login another admin user, which is different from the one, which requires retaining the Insight Tech Console data. This is required for Data Igloo to redirect the targeted user, since Data Igloo cannot redirect the same user as it is currently running with.

Note: If there are no any other admin users on the system, a new temporary admin user must be created, so Data Igloo can be launched from it.

3.      Quit Insight Tech Console, if it is opened. This will ensure that no files or folders will be locked during data relocation.

4.      From the Windows Task Manager stop LskHelper process, if this process is not stopped after closing the Tech Console in previous step.

5.      Using Data Igloo user redirection feature, redirect the targeted user profile, which will be used for running Insight Tech Console. This will ensure some user-specific data of Insight Tech Console will be retained.

6.      Create following new folders, if they do not exist:

On 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight Tech Console

On 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight Tech Console

7.      Using data Igloo folder redirection feature, redirect folders mentioned in previous step:

On 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight Tech Console

On 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight Tech Console

This will ensure some global data of Insight Tech Console will be retained

8.     Using Data Igloo Registry redirection feature, redirect the following Registry keys:

On 32-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Insight Tech Console

On 64-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Insight Tech Console

This will ensure some global data of Insight Teacher Console will be retained

9.      Reboot the system and login the targeted user.

10.  Open Insight Tech Console. At this point the Tech Console should start up as expected.

11.   Add TechConsole.exe process into Windows Firewall exception list if the system prompts to do so. Otherwise manually reconfigure Windows Firewall for exempting Insight Tech Console program using its new location:

On XP systems:

Remove “Insight Tech Console” firewall exception. Insight will automatically recreate new firewall exception using new location of Insight Tech Console program

On Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8:

Open Windows Firewall Advanced Settings snap-in and update “Insight Tech Console” Inbound and Outbound rules properties with new location of TechConsole.exe program.

This will ensure Insight Teacher Console will communicate with Insight Students

12.  Reboot system into Frozen state.

Now Insight Tech Console will retain all its data and configuration settings on Frozen system.

Redirecting Insight Student data

Insight Student may need to retain its channel number, keystroke, Internet history and other data on Frozen systems. Insight Student software keeps its data in certain folders and registries, which are global for all users of the given system. However, in case of relocating Insight Student folders, it may be not possible to stop Insight Student program, since it has self-protection mechanism in place. In this case, one of the solutions would be creating new empty Insight program and data folders and redirecting them before installing Insight Student. Then Insight Student can be installed into its already existing and redirected  folders. Following steps describe the procedure of redirecting Insight Student using the mentioned approach:

1.       Reboot workstation into Thawed state. This will ensure all further described changes will be retained.

2.      If Insight Student is installed, uninstall it. This will ensure that no files or folders will be locked during data relocation.

3.      Create following new folders, if they do not exist:

On XP 32-bit and 64-bit systems:

C:\Documents & Settings\All users\Application Data\Insight

On Vista and Windows 7 Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit systems:

 C:\Programdata\Insight

On all 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight

On all 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight

Note: ProgramData folder is normally hidden on Windows systems. Turn on “Show hidden files and folder” in Windows Explorer to make the folder visible

4.      Using data Igloo folder redirection feature, redirect following folders:

On XP 32-bit and 64-bit systems:

C:\Documents & Settings\All users\Insight

On Vista and Windows 7 Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit systems:

 C:\Programdata\Insight

On all 32-bit systems:

C:\Program Files\Faronics\Insight

On all 64-bit systems:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Faronics\Insight

This will ensure the program data of Insight Student will be retained

5.      Using Data Igloo Registry redirection feature, redirect following Registry keys:

On 32-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Insight

On 64-bit systems:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Insight

This will ensure all Registry based global data of Insight Student will be retained

6.      Install Insight Student.

7.      Reconfigure Windows Firewall for exempting Insight Student program using its new location:

On XP systems:

Remove “Insight Student” firewall exception. Insight will automatically recreate new firewall exception using new location of Insight Student  program

On Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8:

Open Windows Firewall Advanced Settings snap-in and update “Insight Student” Inbound and Outbound rules properties with new location of  Teacher.exe program

This will ensure Insight Teacher Student will communicate with Insight Teacher or Tech Console

8.     Reboot system into Frozen state.

Now Insight Teacher Student will retain all its data and configuration settings on Frozen system.

NOTE: provided above solutions do not support Insight product upgrade in Frozen state. Workstation has to be Thawed in order to upgrade Insight to the next version.
