How do I troubleshoot Windows Updates on my workstation?

If problems are found with getting updates applied to a workstation the following steps may help resolve the problem.

 

Step 1 – Check to make sure the workstation was online.

If workstations are powered down, or in a sleep state, they may not wake on their own to have updates applied. Check the event logs on the computer to ensure that the system was online for updates to be installed. For workstations running Deep Freeze the user should verify that the computer did reboot at the appointed time.

 

Step 2 – Check and verify that the installed products are configured to use a Maintenance Window.

Most Faronics Products use a Maintenance window for the scheduling of updates. Each installed product should be checked to ensure that an appropriate maintenance window is configured, and that each products maintenance window is configured in a similar manner.

 

Step 3 – Verify that the update servers are accessible.

If the Windows Update servers are not accessible the updates cannot be downloaded.

 

Step 4 – Check to see that the updates being installed do not require user interaction.

Any updates that require interaction from the user (such as installs of Internet Explorer) may not be able to be installed automatically and may require either a manual touch or some other method of deployment.

 

Step 5 – Check the Windows Update logs.

Windows logs any errors in the update process in the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and C:\Windows\Windows Update.log files. Checking these files for errors may reveal the cause of the issue and the solution that need to be taken to resolve the problem.
